That night in Liverpool city centre

The night that led to prison, and the end of booze

I’d been playing shit at Newcastle and struggling with injuries and I got dropped from the squad. All the pressure was doing my head in, so I went out that night in Liverpool and had a really good night. I went out with my cousins had a skin-full, spent a few hours in a club and then went off to grab a burger, the Golden Arches called to us.

They were trying to get a rise out of me… I wasn’t having any of it

There was a big group of young lads in McDonalds, (Everton fans funnily enough) they were all a bit pissed up and aggressive. They were all having a go and calling me a wanker, and generally trying to get the rise out of me. I wasn’t having any of it though. So we all left the McDonalds and walked off down the street. I was chatting on my phone and my cousins and everyone that I was with were about 100 yards back along the road arguing and shouting with these lads from the McDonalds. Anyways, our Nadine runs up to me and tells me that one of these lads kicked her in the shin. What with the booze and the fact that someone had just assaulted my cousin, I just blew my top – I smacked the first one of them that came near me.

He was 23 years old and worked on a building site and was as hard as nails

And this is where the press always gets it massively wrong. The guy that took the brunt of it (the guy you’ve probably seen me hitting on the You Tube video) was 23 years old (slightly younger than me) and worked on a building site – he was as hard as nails. But they always say that I attacked some defenceless 17 year old who wouldn’t say boo to a goose – it’s more of a story then isn’t it? The truth is this poor little teenager had threatened to stab me, so I just punched once him – I wanted him away from me.

They don’t report that someone threatened to stab me… or that one of them assaulted a woman

But that doesn’t make the news does it? It doesn’t fit their agenda. They don’t show the CCTV footage of them abusing us in McDonalds. Or of me trying to walk away from it all. Or of a group of 10 drunken lads following us for 10 minutes: verbally abusing and throwing things at us. Or that one of them assaulted a woman. They don’t report that someone threatened to stab me. They just cut the facts to fit their story. Publish and be damned!

To be honest Joey you are obviously no angel, but the one thing I can say about your not afraid to speak your mind, I'm exactly the same, not a bad thing but a no no in the workplace, it's as if nobody is meant to have any sort of opinion whatsoever ie the boss is always right  - is he b*****ks.

Probably why I'm back working for myself, as all companies seem want nowadays are robotic style workers who are up the gaffers arse

The papers juice up every story to suit, I bet you the next time your name is mentioned in the tabloids football realated or not, the truth will be twisted round and bits added on to suit them.

A good saying I heard years ago was "believe half you hear and nothing you read"

Good luck with QPR or Marseille

PS   Let your feet do the talking !! (on the pitch)

I think it absolutely ridiculous that Joey was punished so severely for this. I'm not saying the way Joey reacted was the right way to deal with the situation, but if I'm honest I can't say I'd of reacted differently! This happens every single saturday night up and down the country, yet it's very rare you'll see it making headlines in the papers. The only reason Joey was punished was because of his 'celebrity status' which is incredibly unfair if you ask me.

Haha if you only hit him in defence , because " you wanted him away from you" why did you then repeatedly lamp him when he was on the deck. The CCTV shows you then going after him 3 times after it's been split up, how can you possibly try and justify that ?

Everyone of these stories sound like they should end with "needless to say I had the last laugh."

This is all very good but we all want the real scoop Joey, what was said in the changing room between you and Shearer. Stop holding out on us ;-)

There should be a comma after 'cousins' in the first paragraph.

The truth doesn't sell papers unfortunately and although you weren't innocent, these people werent either. With a profile of a footballer they think it's their given right to shout abuse! It's not and karma will come back and bite them in the ass. Really like the site, and the debates you encourage - I am pro Barton, a debate I engage with my friends! :)

People are always going to try and start trouble with you because of the profile you have. It can't be easy having to try and not react when things like this happen !!

@DanielBather  Obviously he never had the last laugh he went to jail!

Not nice in Strangeways is it Joey? I spent a long time in and out of there untill they opened Forest Bank that place is fairly easy compared to the cackhole that is The Ways! I haven't been back for 9 years so am a reformed character.

@tommysullivan Hi tommy. Not sure what you'd posted. A few of us at First 10 help administer Joey's site in terms of the comments. Nothing's taken down unless offensive to others, for example bad language is automatically removed. It's not Joey who'd remove anything. It's a balance to allow healthy freedom of speech without abuse or anything offensive, that already happens in Twitter. Hope this makes sense. Cheers.
