10 things I have learnt about l’OM

So it has been a fantastic start for the club now with 5 wins from 5, I got talking to a couple of the staff at the training ground and they were telling me it was the first time they had ever started a league season with 5 consecutive wins, some achievement by the players considering the stature of the football club. It has been over 40 years since L”OM started with 4 back to back league wins, long may this continue. This got me thinking so I decided to do some research on the club and get my head around the ins and outs, be interested to learn more so if there are any other interesting facts about the club please let me know…

1)   Nicknames

Marseille are known as the Bad Boys of French football and Les Phoceens

2)   Robert Louis-Dreyfus

RLD an absolute legend at Marseille and deservedly so, Dreyfus got involved with Marseille between 1996 and 2007, following events when the club had hit rock bottom after their demotion to Ligue 2. RLD used his power at Adidas to sponsor Marseille and soon witnessed shirt sales rocket – he wasn’t afraid of putting his hand in his pocket either, reportedly spending €200m on the club. Dreyfus single-handedly rebuilt the club whilst helping it to reach two Uefa Cup finals, two French cup finals and finished runner-up in the league three times.

3) The club badge

The clubs founder was responsible for original design which features the letters “D” and “M”, this has changed and now the letter and “M” is positioned over an “O” with the gold star above to commemorate their European triumph. The club’s motto “Droit au But” translates to straight to the goal. I am a big fan of this motto, no messing around, get the job done.

4) Massive rivalry with PSG

This match is up there with Inter Milan vs AC Milan, Real Madrid vs Barcelona and Everton vs Liverpool. Referred to as ‘Le Classique’ and like other major football rivalries, the antipathy between the clubs stretches to social, historical and social behaviours.

I’m eagerly anticipating this game and although I won’t be available on 7th October, hopefully I’ll have established myself in the team for the return match in Paris.

5) Largest fan base in France, Fan groups

Olympique de Marseille has 12 million fans worldwide.

6) Before and after game ‘Jump’ by Van Halen is played and ‘Come with me’ after a goal

7) Jose Anigo

Sporting director Jose Anigo, a successful defender, racked up 206 appearances during his eight-year spell with the club, he then moved on to management and steered Marseille to a Europa League runners-up medal in 2004. Jose worked hard to get me at the club and I can’t thank him enough for his efforts, he’s remained true to the club and if I can adopt just a fragment of his success, then I can reflect on my time here as a great achievement in my career.

8) The Velodrome

The second largest stadium is France has a 60,031 capacity, the nearest comparison in the Premier League would be Arsenal’s 60,361 Emirates Stadium. The name ‘Stade Velodrome’ derives from the cycling track that was originally in place between the ground and the stand until the 1970’s. Having watched from the stands, the atmosphere within the Velodrome was like no other I’d experienced, the fans were buzzing throughout, an occasion I cannot wait to experience as a player.

9) The club has hosted a long list of footballing greats

Chris WaddleDrogba, Franck RiberyRobert Pires, Dider Deschamps, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Marcel Deasilly and the great Jean Pierre Papin have all played for Marseille

10) Trophies won

Marseille were the first club to win the newly-named Champions League and are the second most successful club in French domestic football with nine titles behind As Saint-Etienne who’ve accumulated ten.

Uefa Champions League - Winners 1992-93

Uefa Cup/Europa League - Runners up 1998-9 and 2003-4

Domestic Competition - Ligue 1  1936–371947–481970–711971–721988–891989–901990–911991–922009–10

i am not old enough to be a l' OM historian but here are some interesting facts in the recently OM history

robert louis dreyfuss, bought Adidas after benard tapie he also bought l'OM after Tapie in the meantime L'OM was over the control of the city

in 1994 l'OM stars all left the club and they asked young players of the club tho save the club for relegation to D3 witch they did  ( jose anigo was one of them )

robert louis dreyfuss putted a lot of his own money to make marseille back on top again but choosed the wrong guys( president, managers etc ..) to succeed

he almost was sent off in prison for this and his coach rolland courbis was sent to prison

jose anigo is the only coach in france to be fired for catastropic results and a humiliation against psg at velodrome to be promoted general manager of the club

l'OM is the only club ever in france who had the balls to send his entire reserve team to face psg -om at le parc des princes ( the most lucrative game of the year for annoncers ) to protest again the french fa decision that forbid marseille's fans to support the team inside le parc des princes and the were heroics cause they drew 0-0 ( we were fighting for the tittle at the time )

l'OM is the only french club that made 2 C1 finals , and semi stolen with a hand goal ( maradona style) against benfica

also l'om is the only  french club that made 2 C3 finals

also has the record of french cups history( 10 ), league cup history (3  in a row , and overall)

i'm sure i'm forgetting things but that's what i can say for now

sorry for my english

Fabien H José Anigo ?! It was in the 80's but what you write is great

when i read the comments and it brings back that game we suppose to have fixed? please L OM was the best team in europe and va was what it always was a 2 division team in the making, we did not need anyone to beat them , i saw the game and like many i never though anything like what came out, basil boli did not either but as fabien say it was political and only political, but they use l OM to destroy tapie and what the French fa did was disgusting, i will never forgive that, 2 years in 2 division, we won it but they refuse to let us go up so we had to do another year, i better stop its getting the blood going

Fabien H 10 pts

in france money and bling bling have always been "tabou" and in the 90's Bernard Tapie showed up money and bling bling with l'OM and the biggest yacht in the world he bought but the problems came when he was member of the goverment and became  favorite minister   of the french president

the opposition did everything they can to break him down and l' OM was a perfect opportunity for them

we were on the top  of the world almost signed diego maradona and then fiew days after winning the champions league and the championnat de france he was sent to prison and l'om in D2

but also when l' OM won the D2 tittle the french financial fair play commission decided to let us in D2 with no reason then came robert lois dreyfus

BrunoCompassi 9 pts

l om c est plus de 100 annes d histoire , et eux ? 1970 c est rigolos c est des petits tout jeunes , un club plastique

Fabien H 10 pts

we can also mention 1998 when paris st germain let intentionally bordeaux win at parc des princes cause this win made bordeaux champions instead of marseille ( elie baup was bordeaux 's coach at the time )

you can see psg's smile on their faces after loosing the game at home

BrunoCompassi 9 pts

Fabien H its true but they paid  for it last year the coakroaches of Paris and i put a picture to my comment to say: psg=enculees, can t stay polite when the word paris is mention sorry fabien for that, i just hate them

BrunoCompassi 9 pts

12 millions fans no its more like 30 internationally , you miss the cups but its not like fa cup but its still a big deal in France as for what was done to l OM after we won the Champion s league was disgusting and will stay with every one of us forever, they try to destroy us from the north but they failed we are back , Tapie made mistakes but look what he did for us, without him we would never have got to the 6 maie 1993, its an endless debate some don t like him , some love him, L OM is bye far the most prestigious club in France and in europe when people get marseilles they worry , they worry a lot, in italie l om is bad news because we have beaten the 2 big milan teams times and times again, not many clubs can say that!

sgilmion 5 pts

And if you want to ask Jose about the darkest period ever of l'om, be careful. He still hates the people who were there a t that time, included Bernes and Tapie. But fans forgive..if I were a marseille fan, i would never. I would be so ashamed of the people who dirtied the name of my club. This is the difference between france and england : we accept what is unnacceptable.

sgilmion 5 pts

lol, the 1993 was withdraw because of cheating. Marseille try to buy a game against Valenciennes, but were caught. Some Marseillais also count the 1942 title, when france was occupied by the german, and the "Free" France was only under Vichy, with only 9 teams, and is not officialy count. So this is 9 and only 9.

Joey B 91 pts

It looks as though I am going to need to update this blog, plenty of discussion going on though, so I am right in thinking it is 11 titles that Marseille have won??

Fabien H 10 pts

Joey B yes one before the clubs became professionals and one in 93 cause the scandal of the Va Om game ( next sunday's game by the way )

In domestic trophies you should ad :

10 coupe de France ( french's cup) which makes l' OM  the most tittled club in that competition

3 coupe de la Ligue ( 2010-2011-2012)  we won trhee in a row wich i s a french record too

;)

Was in  Marseille when we (NUFC) played them in the UEFA Cup semi. Great atmosphere and also what seemed to be a really cool (if a bit moody too) city. I wish OM well they are a proper club.

BrunoCompassi 9 pts

Hisk was there too, the only french to fly from gatwick to marseilles in the plane but gordies were really nice , no trouble at all, on the return they were more calm but i must say in Marseilles no 1 has bad memories of newcastle, they took us to the limit and we needed drogba to get to them so salut to them

cicci 6 pts

joey...

our ennemies say 9 titles

we know our History : we've 11 titles 1929 - 1937 - 1948 - 1971 -1972 - 1989 - 1990 - 1991 - 1992 - 1993 - 2010

ask José about this,

if you really want to be a part of it please never say that again.

(and RLD is not a legend)

Great debut tonight JB. You really got to see what playing for l'OM is all about - never say die! I hope you get to see the tape of the match in French. The commentators seem to think your surname is Joeybarton. I might just have that put on my shirt. Well played & bonne chance.

Maybe Bernard Tapie and Raymond " La science " Goethals could have their place here... Otherwise this is a great post.

Peut etre que Bernard Tapie et Raymond " La science " Goethals aurait pu avoir leur place... Sinon c'est un bon article

Hi Joey,

Thank you for promoting Marseille and our beloved OM overseas. Just so you know, "les Phocéens" comes from Phocée, a greek city (situated in Turkey nowadays) whose sailors discovered and founded Massalia 2600 years ago. Massalia became Massilia during the Roman era, and finally Marseille.

Best regards,

B.

Hello Joey for the domestic competition you have forget two dates :

1929 and the best in 1993, the domestic competition of 1993 has been clear by the ligue of french football but in 1993 Marseille with Tapie were the best of the world.

In our hearth Tapie is our Idol and for us Marseille in 1993 was the champion.

Officialy we have 9 domestic competitions but for the real fans it's 11 !

Allez L'OM ! Come on Joey ! Come On !

Hello Joey,

Nice stuff there but you forgot couple  things. I,ve been a fan all my life and here is some pointers. You cannot forget the 91 european final when Marseille lost in pks to Belgrade. They qualified by beating the Great AC Milan (Barcelona of that era) who had player like van basten, gullit, rijkaard, baresi ancelotti and more. That AC Milan team only had 2 loss from 88-89 to 94-95 and they were all against Marseille. Around 2000 during an indoor friendly, marseille beat ac milan again. Galliani stated that day '' Nous ne vous battrons donc jamais'' . You cannot forget to talk about Bernard Tapie, Abedi Pélé (the Ayews will get offended), Rudi Voller', Enzo Francescoli, Boksic, Barthez, Ben Arfa and Nasri. and the 93 league 1 Title. We won it but because of Tapie's political stand they had to get to US... Its like Al Capone being hit with Taxe evasion.

I know you won't be playin' next October 7th against Paris, pity ! But still... you gonna play the game back for sure :)

Obviously you've already heard about all that stuff, but let me post a little video. In case you haven't watched it yet, no doubt you'll appreciate ;)

Good luck for tomorrow, I hope to see you playing !

You should meet Eric Di Meco. This guy is a legend.

mamad57290 6 pts

Great initiative from you to know our club. To me, RLD was not that important to the club. He was not aprreciated at all, even now his wife Margarita. I even dont understand why we changed the name of our training field. For all of us, it is still 'La Commanderie'. Anyway, Bernard Tapie and Marcel Leclerc were the 2 most respectful and succesful president we used to have.

In the legendary players, we were lucky to cheer Skoblar, Magnusson, Ben Barek, JPP, Waddle, Boli, Amoros, Di Meco, Barthez, Pelé (the Andre and Jordan Ayew dad), Drogba ...

Whether our club is still alive today, we have to thank 'Les Minots' who saved our club in the 80'.

Also, you have to know the story of Patrice De Peretti aka 'Depé', the most famous and respectful OM fan. He passed away in 2000.

We hate Paris, Canal +,  L'Equipe and all those shitty journalists. Our real rivals are Toulon, Bordeaux and Saint Etienne.

Hope you will also write your own history here in Marseille Joey!

Fabien H 10 pts

Also Diego Maradona agreed to move to l'OM but under the pressure of the fans the president of Napoli had to cancelled the deal at the last minute

and Jean Pierre Papin is the only player in history who has won a ballon d'or with a french team Marseille

JLW OM MU 6 pts

Hi Joey, Lovely that you spread the glory of l'OM to all English speaking football fans. Marseille has actually won 11 Ligue 1 titles (and is above St Etienne), including 1929 - before the Professional era in France - and 1993: although this title has never been validated by the LFP, it was won on the pitch and is counted by the club in the Trophy Cabinet. And rightfully so. It was sealed 3 days after the CL triumph against AC Milan in Munich, at the Velodrome vs PSG, with a 3-1 thumping and arguably the most spectacular and beautiful goal ever scored in French football, by Basile BOLI. Check out this game in full and you will see that the OM-PSG rivalry could produce fierce battles that had then nothing to be ashamed of when compared with the Premier League in terms of intensity. Looking forward to seeing you play for us, hopefully tomorrow night! You have joined a legendary club, that is indeed made for you. Welcome Home. All the best from Mauritius!

toinou1404 5 pts

The most popular players in the Velodrome are Valbuena Cheyrou (they're here since 2007), Andre Ayew and Souley Diawara. BE CAREFULL OM fans can very Quickly, to morrow, hate players the did love  yesterday
